December 7, 2017

Hi Parents,

I am reposting the relevant sections of our Upcoming Dates for your convenience.

Advent

Monday, December 11 is our 2nd week of Advent Liturgy at 11:00 a.m.  Our class will be presenting this Liturgy along with buddies from Mr. Hopkins' grade 4 class.  All are warmly encouraged to attend.  Please have your child dress nicely for this special occasion.

Thursday, December 21 will be our Christmas Concert Dress Rehearsal from 1:00-3:30 p.m.  This gives the Primary students a chance to share their song/dance and watch their friends' as well.  Parents must wait until the next day to view the concert.

Friday, December 22 is our Primary Christmas Concert from 9:30-10:30 a.m.  Please plan to attend to see your child sing and dance a tribute to Baby Jesus.

This is our song, overwhelmingly chosen by the students:

O What a Special Night

Christmas Concert Costume Update

Sheep - sheep are asked to dress in all black or all white.  We will provide ears, gloves and a tail.

Cows - cows are asked to wear black, white or a combination of the two.  We will provide ears, a furry bow, and a skirt to be wrapped around the waist over their clothes.

Donkeys - donkeys are asked to wear black or grey bottoms.  We will provide ears, a grey hoodie and a tail.

Joseph - Joseph is asked to wear a plain coloured robe, preferably brown, tan or grey.

Mary - Mary's costume is being provided by her family.

Baby Jesus - Jesus is asked to wear either all white, or a white shirt with black pants.

Extra work for over the holidays

I have sent home some word building activities to work on with your child.  Each page is followed by a page with larger letters.  Please cut out these letters and have your child manipulate them to form the words.  These will help your child with their reading, writing and spelling.

Please have your children write purposefully over the holidays.  You could have them create a list for Santa, a card for Grandma, a thank you note for Aunt Kerry, etc.  They should be sounding out each word one at a time (broken into chunks if it is a longer word) and trying to write at least one letter for each sound they hear.  When they are finished, you can then write their message in pencil on another sheet of paper and have them copy the correct version.

Please do correct reversals of letters and numbers.

I strongly recommend that your child reads on Raz Kids every day at their level.  If there is a problem with their level (too easy or too difficult), please let me know immediately and I will move them accordingly.

I am sending home a game called Roll to 100.  Your child can play this alone with 2 colours of dry erase markers, or play with 1, 2 or 3 others, as long as everyone has one colour of their own.

Next week I will send home a 10 frame game for those children who could benefit from it.  Instructions will be included with the game.

**Please let me know if you have not received the December homework, good deed Angels, Build-a-word package, or Roll to 100 (sent home Friday, December 7).  Things do tend to go missing from time to time on the way home.**

Advent Bags
I have two Advent Bags in circulation.  Each child will have the opportunity to take the bag home overnight and enjoy the contents (songs, prayers, an Advent wreath with candles and a story) and return to school the next day.  I apologize in advance if every child does not have the opportunity before Christmas as sometimes bags are forgotten at school or home.  We will try our best.  If you miss the bag before Christmas, it will be sent home in the New Year.

Parent Phone Interviews
There are still a few parents I have not yet had the opportunity to speak with.  I will be making phone calls next Tuesday, the 12th, from 3:45-4:30, and next Thursday, the 14th, from 3:45-4:30.  Please write a note in your child's agenda indicating which day would work best for you and I will do my best to accommodate you.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!!

Missing LOL dolls

Hi Parents,
I'd just like to make you aware that two LOL dolls have been taken from bags today and last week.  If one pops up in your child's pocket or backpack, could you kindly send it back in?  Thanks so much.  Just a reminder that toys are better left safely at home as they do tend to vanish mysteriously leading to many tears.  (Lego Bey Blades are okay during our Bey Blades inquiry.)  We do our best to ensure belongings are kept safe!  Please reinforce with your child the need to leave others' belongings alone.
Thanks again!

Peanuts and Tree Nuts

Hi Parents,
Just a friendly reminder not to send products containing peanuts or tree nuts as many students at our school have life-threatening allergies.  Please reinforce with your child that there is no sharing of any food with other students for these important reasons.
Thanks for your support!

November 16

Hello parents!

We have begun practising for our upcoming Christmas Concert.  Details to follow.  The students are divided into groups of sheep, cows, donkeys and we also have Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus.  Please let me know if any of you are interested in helping us sew small items for costumes.

Sheep - white clothes, sheep ear headband (we have these already), fluffy tail
Cows - white clothes, black felt cut like cow spots and pinned to clothes, cow ear headband and tail
Donkeys - grey or white clothes, donkey ear headband and tail

Mary - white and/or blue robe/dress and veil
Joseph - brown robe
Baby Jesus - "swaddling clothes" (sheet) and white clothes to wear underneath for special liturgical dance at the end of the song

We also will be beginning our preparations for the Second Week of Advent Liturgy that we will be presenting with Mr. Hopkins' grade 4 class in the gym (details to follow).  I will be sending home a line for your child to memorize.  If they are afraid, they may go with a friend.  If they are still afraid, they can just sit and sing with the group, no problem.

We have been busy...

Practicing skip counting using movements...

Remembering...
Practising sight words...

Communicating with Ms. Casey's class as it was discovered that both classes have a similar Panda stuffie.

Writing books...

More sight words...

 Collaborating...

Tidying our classroom (we're becoming so good at it!) and "scanning" for any places that need a little more attention...

Investigating materials and objects in Science using our senses...

Practising throwing, rolling and catching in gym...

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

November 13

Dear Parents,
I am so sorry for being away last Thursday evening.  It was just not possible for me to attend.  I thought that it might be simple if we kept last Thursday's schedule and just transferred it to this Thursday.  If that does not work for you, please let me know and I will be happy to accommodate you.  You may also prefer a phone interview.  In any case, please let me know which would be most convenient for you.
Happy to be back!
Darcia

Please let me know if you do not receive your letter or if you are having difficulty logging in.  You can also find Raz Kids in the links at the right of my blog.  Raz kids starts right at the beginning and gets progressively more difficult.

Another excellent website for early reading students is Starfall.  This has learning opportunities for students at a variety of levels.

A popular website for different grades is ABCya.

Enjoy!
